Never left out once more: Big 12 coaches like 12-squad playoff

Large 12 coaches say they similar the proposal to expand the Higher Football Playoff to 12 teams

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Big 12 Conference would certainly do good from an expanded Higher Football Playoff and likely never be left out again.

Under the proposed 12-team format that would still be at least a couple of seasons abroad, six-time defending Big 12 champion Oklahoma would have been in the playoff again final season. Iowa State, which had a league-best viii-1 tape in the regular season earlier losing its beginning championship game in any conference, would accept go the first Large 12 squad other than the Sooners to make it.

Neither the Sooners or Cyclones — picked to stop 1-2 once again this flavor — made it under the electric current 4-team playoff that began seven seasons ago, when Big 12 co-champions TCU and Baylor were left out after the concluding CFP rankings.

"I recollect the expansion that'southward been proposed is a great outset. I commend the commission that put it together because yous've got to put yourself out at that place. You've got to start somewhere," Oklahoma charabanc Lincoln Riley said Wed at Big 12 Media Days.

"Information technology addressed getting the conference champions in the playoff, which has needed to happen," he said. "It addressed a pathway for a Group of Five member to be able to get into the playoffs, which honestly hasn't been realistic under the current system. In my heed, those are all peachy things."

Oklahoma lost CFP semifinal games in 2015, 2017, 2022 and 2019, but would have fabricated the playoff the past six seasons if there was 12-team fields.

Iowa Country autobus Matt Campbell said he hadn't actually reflected on the possibilities, or what could have been, but expressed the desire for a balanced arroyo.

"I'one thousand a guy that played Division Iii football game, and there is a playoff, and I think that part of information technology you certainly honey. Manifestly you lot love the bowl games and what that stands for. And then that balance, I think, is what we're trying to discover," Campbell said. "And I certainly recall the more teams that are competing for that playoff come Nov and December, the more than universities and pupil bodies are engaged in the entirety of the finish of the season."

Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby was one of four members of the CFP management committee that over a two-twelvemonth menstruum considered various options, from remaining at four playoff teams to expanding to as many as xvi. The subcommittee, which too included SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey, Mountain West Commissioner Craig Thompson and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick, recommended a 12-team playoff that would include the six highest-ranked briefing champions and six at-large choices.

"The first piece of feedback I got was at that place was great surprise we went as large every bit 12," Bowlsby said Wednesday.

That proposal was presented final calendar month to the total direction committee — 10 conference commissioners and Swarbrick — and so to the eleven university presidents and chancellors who make up the CFP board of managers that has the concluding say.

"The motivation for expanding the playoff is not the money," Bowlsby said. "The motivation for expanding the playoff is the realization that participation could be broader and access could be more readily achieved, and more than institutions could stay close to the flame."

The lath of managers are next scheduled to encounter Sept. 28 after getting feedback from their ain schools and the ones they represent. Bowlsby expressed hope that the CFP is shut to a resolution past time the board meets, though the earliest possibility for implementing whatsoever changes would however be 2023, and could exist as late as 2026.

"Moving frontward, we haven't had a year in the Large 12 in the playoff era where our champion didn't finish in a position where it was one of the top-six rated champions," Bowlsby said. "While information technology'south not automatic, I think our chances of having our champion and perhaps one other in the event are pretty good."

With TCU heading into its 10th Large 12 season, coach Gary Patterson feels the Horned Frogs would have had multiple playoff appearances in a 12-team format.

In 2014, the first year of the four-squad CFP, the Frogs were tertiary in the rankings when they finished the regular season with a 55-3 win over Iowa State, the same solar day Ohio State shell Wisconsin 59-0 in the Big Ten title game. The next day, the Buckeyes moved into the top four, with one-loss teams TCU and Baylor the first 2 teams out of the initial playoff. Kansas State was 11th in the terminal rankings that year.

Patterson said he likes the proposal for an expanded playoff, though isn't certain about the future of the conference championship games. He, similar other Big 12 coaches, wants the remaining bowl construction to be preserved.

"Personally, merely because less games, I wish they would have taken the championship games out of the equation and played that first week. Your beginning playoff week would have been commencement week in December," Patterson said. "Y'all throw finals and everything in there, yous've got to have some time to be able to practice all this where your kids can even so exist students."
